The Broken Piece
3d Printed Custom Ceiling System
The broken piece is an exercise in digital fabrication and customisable design. It consists in a series of assemblable custom ceiling panels, informed by lighting positions and building systems location. The design takes the main inspiration from the amethyst crystal, expressing the duality between outer smooth surface and inner complex crystallisation. The crystals can grow on the desired surface according to different parameters, varying sizes and thicknesses, related to the fabrication material, allowing for light to go through certain areas with different intensities. A 1:2 panel prototype was produced through the use of a sand binderjet 3D printer.
